Present Perfect Tense

Present Perfect Tense:

Present Perfect Tense can be used in the following situations:

I. To describe actions that happened in pastbut some of whose effects are still active at present.

Examples:

  • He has submitted an application for the post of General Manager.
  • The Chairman has gone to Italy for a few weeks.
  •       In the first sentence, the action of submitting the application happened in past and its effects are  active at present. An effect could be that he is waiting for the result or he wants to know whether he will be selected or not.

         In the second sentence, the action of going took place in past but its effects are still active at present. The chairman is not in officr these days as he is in Italy.

    II. Another application for Present Perfect Tense could be to indicate an action that began at some time in the past and has continued up to the present moment. Usually since and for are used in this case.

    Examples:

  • They have lived in this town for ten years.
  • They have known each other for a long time.
